One SMALL miracle: Restoring an Abandoned Jewish Cemetery

Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a screening of one SMALL miracle, followed by a discussion with preservationist Alan Metnick.

One SMALL miracle tells the inspiring story of the restoration of the Jewish cemetery in Goniądz, Poland, the ancestral home village (shtetl) of filmmaker Dr. Myrna Teck’s family. After discovering the abandoned cemetery in 2018, Dr. Teck partnered with local residents to restore and commemorate this sacred site.

Following the film, Alan Metnick will discuss the importance of preserving Jewish cemeteries, working with local communities, and honoring the histories of once-vibrant Jewish towns. Drawing on more than two decades of preservation work in Poland, including the restoration of the Jewish cemetery in Sławatycze, the village where his maternal grandparents lived, Alan will share how cemetery preservation helps safeguard Jewish history for future generations.

About the Speaker
Alan Metnick holds degrees in history and photography and has devoted more than two decades to preserving Jewish cemeteries in Poland. He has worked closely with local communities to restore these sacred sites and preserve the memory of the Jewish communities that once flourished there.
