And You Shall Tell: Remembering Ruth Oppenheim
November 7 @ 7:45 pm – 8:30 pm EST
Presentation, Session I: The Evening of Jewish Renaissance
Holocaust survivor Ruth Oppenheim spent decades sharing her story and teaching Rhode Islanders about the consequences of hatred, persecution, and indifference. Following her death in 2026 at the age of 98, her family continues the work of preserving and sharing her remarkable life.
In this presentation, Ruth’s son, Jeff Oppenheim, will share his mother’s experiences, from her childhood in Nazi Germany and her family’s escape to the United States to the life she built in Rhode Island. Drawing on Ruth’s testimony, family photographs, personal memories, and recollections and artwork from his sister, Claudia Cameron, Jeff will offer an intimate portrait of Ruth as a survivor, mother, and educator.
Laura Auketayeva, Ph.D., Director of Education and Programs at the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center, will provide brief historical context, helping situate Ruth’s experiences within the broader history of Jewish life under Nazism and the importance of survivor testimony.
Together, these reflections invite us to consider what it means to carry a loved one’s story forward after the eyewitness is no longer with us, and how subsequent generations preserve and share that history.
