Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a conversation with award-winning journalist and author Daniela Gerson about her new book, The Wanderers: A Story of Exile, Survival, and Unexpected Love in the Shadow of World War II.
When Daniela Gerson met her wife, Talia Inlender, they had no idea that their families shared a remarkable history. Decades earlier, their grandparents had lived only blocks apart in a small Polish town before fleeing east to survive the Holocaust. Their parallel journeys carried them thousands of miles across the Soviet Union, through exile, forced labor, and years of displacement before they eventually rebuilt their lives.
Part family history, part investigative journey, and part exploration of the refugee experience, The Wanderers uncovers the largely overlooked story of the majority of Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust by escaping eastward into the Soviet Union. In doing so, it offers a powerful reflection on survival, migration, family memory, and the difficult choices people make when seeking safety and a future for their children.
Drawing connections between past and present, Gerson explores how stories of displacement continue to resonate across generations and remain deeply relevant today.
