DESCRIPTION:The Jews of Nazi Vienna: Rescue and Destruction \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin historian Dr. Ilana Offenberger as she examines the experiences of Vienna’s Jewish community under Nazi rule. Drawing on years of archival research\, Dr. Offenberger explores how Jews navigated persecution through resilience\, rescue efforts\, and acts of survival while confronting the rapid destruction of a centuries-old community. Her lecture will illuminate both the devastating impact of Nazi policies and the extraordinary human stories that emerged in their wake. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocal residents watch the burning of the ceremonial hall at the Jewish cemetery in Graz during Kristallnacht (the “Night of Broken Glass”). Graz\, Austria\, November 9–10\, 1938. Dokumentationsarchiv des Oesterreichischen Widerstandes \n\n\n\nAs the capital of Austria\, Vienna was home to one of Europe’s most vibrant Jewish communities before the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. Following the Anschluss\, Austrian Jews faced immediate persecution\, dispossession\, and violence\, culminating in the devastation of Kristallnacht and the deportation of tens of thousands to ghettos and concentration camps. \n\n\n\nRSVP here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Offenberger is Associate Teaching Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and author of The Jews of Nazi Vienna\, 1938–1945: Rescue and Destruction. Her research focuses on the Holocaust\, Nazi Germany\, Jewish responses to persecution\, and the history of Vienna’s Jewish community.

SUMMARY:How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors Julie Masis for a compelling presentation on her new book\, How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her grandfather Shlomo’s memories\, family history\, and extensive archival research\, Masis recounts his survival under Romanian occupation during the Holocaust. Born in present-day Moldova\, Shlomo later immigrated to Massachusetts\, where he lived to the age of 102. During the program\, Julie will read excerpts from the book\, share family photographs\, discuss her research\, including discoveries from Romanian newspapers published during World War II\, and reflect on her journey to uncover her family’s past. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. \n\n\n\nThis program is appropriate for adults as well as middle and high school students. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP here.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulie Masis is a journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors. She is the editor and publisher of the Russian Boston Gazette\, a newspaper serving the Russian-speaking community in the Greater Boston area. Her work on Jewish history and other topics has appeared in The Times of Israel\, The Jerusalem Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Christian Science Monitor\, The Montreal Gazette\, The Globe and Mail\, and numerous other publications. Beyond journalism\, she has taught English to Buddhist monks in Cambodia\, organized tours to the Khmer Rouge tribunal\, and recently learned to ice skate.
