SUMMARY:Author Talk: Daniela Gerson\, "The Wanderers"
DESCRIPTION:Where: Dwares JCC | Providence\, RI \n\n\n\nJoin the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for an evening with award-winning journalist and author Daniela Gerson\, in conversation with David Cicilline\, former U.S. Congressman\, former Mayor of Providence\, and President and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation. \n\n\n\nGerson will discuss her acclaimed new book\, The Wanderers: A Story of Exile\, Survival\, and Unexpected Love in the Shadow of World War II. \n\n\n\nWhen Daniela Gerson met her wife\, Talia Inlender\, they discovered that their families shared an extraordinary history. Decades earlier\, their grandparents had lived only blocks apart in a small Polish town before fleeing east to survive the Holocaust. Their parallel journeys carried them thousands of miles across the Soviet Union through exile\, forced labor\, and years of displacement before they eventually rebuilt their lives. \n\n\n\nPart family history\, part investigative journey\, and part exploration of the refugee experience\, The Wanderers uncovers the largely overlooked story of the majority of Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust by escaping eastward into the Soviet Union. In doing so\, it offers a powerful reflection on survival\, migration\, family memory\, and the difficult choices people make when seeking safety and a future for their children. \n\n\n\nFollowing a brief presentation by the author\, Gerson will join David Cicilline for a conversation about the book\, followed by audience Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase and signing. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Jewish Experience: Three Personal Family Narratives (Documentary Shorts)
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with the Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center \n\n\n\nThree personal family stories about Jewish heritage. \n\n\n\nMy Ioannina Odyssey | Directed by Gary Glassman and Manya GlassmanWhen a mysterious box arrives on my doorstep\, its century-old ship manifests\, family photos\, and crumbling documents launch an odyssey to Ioannina\, a medieval walled city in the mountains of northern Greece. Home to the Romaniotes\, an ancient Greek Jewish people\, Ioannina is where history and myth merge in my family lore. There\, with my wife and daughter\, we uncover a story of miracles and murder\, love and loss\, and prophecies that come true. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNow It’s a Strange House | Directed by Ethan Rosenthal Grossman and Cate KnotheThrough newly rediscovered 30-year-old videotapes of Ethan’s great-grandmother and recently captured digital footage\, Now It’s a Strange House explores how the small German village of Eubigheim grapples with the history of its Nazification. \n\n\n\nAmid the resurgence of German fascism and far-right politics\, the townspeople are forced to confront forgotten narratives and the unsettling truth that they may be less accepting than they once believed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKicking the Family Curse | Directed by Aviya ShakedAviya makes no secret of the fact that she dreams of the perfect romantic relationship\, but first she must come to terms with the disastrous life partnerships of her mother and numerous aunts. Using interview material and graphic art\, and with a great deal of compassion and humour\, Aviya delves into critical decisions these women made in their youth and asks the ultimate questions about romantic love: Is it attainable? Can it last? And what are the factors that contribute to us choosing the people least likely to bring us happiness? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuntime: Approximately 95 minutes\, followed by a conversation and Q&A with filmmakers Gary Glassman and Manya Glassman. We are also pleased to welcome filmmakers Ethan Rosenthal Grossman and Cate Knothe\, who are expected to attend the world premiere of Now It’s a Strange House. \n\n\n\nTickets are available through the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Get your tickets here.

SUMMARY:Dominican Haven: The Jewish Refugee Settlement in Sosúa\, 1940–1945
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dr. Marion Kaplan\, Skirball Professor of Modern Jewish History Emerita\, New York University \n\n\n\nAs National Hispanic Heritage Month begins\, join us for the remarkable story of one of the Holocaust’s least-known rescue efforts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the Second World War\, the Dominican Republic became the only country in the Americas to officially welcome large numbers of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Thousands applied for refuge\, and several hundred ultimately rebuilt their lives in the small agricultural community of Sosúa on the island’s northern coast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow did this extraordinary rescue effort come about? Who were the refugees who made the journey? And how did they adapt from life in Europe’s cities to farming in the Caribbean with the support of their Dominican neighbors? \n\n\n\nDrawing on years of archival research\, acclaimed historian Marion Kaplan explores this unique chapter of Holocaust history and the life-saving connections between Jewish refugees and the Dominican Republic. \n\n\n\nRSVP here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nMarion Kaplan is Skirball Professor of Modern Jewish History Emerita at New York University and one of the world’s leading historians of German Jewry and the Holocaust. She is the award-winning author of numerous books\, including Dominican Haven: The Jewish Refugee Settlement in Sosúa\, 1940–1945 and Between Dignity and Despair: Jewish Life in Nazi Germany. Her scholarship has transformed our understanding of Jewish life before\, during\, and after the Holocaust. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public.
