SUMMARY:Revisiting Claude Lanzmann's "Shoah" in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:In 1973\, filmmaker Claude Lanzmann began work on what would become his landmark documentary Shoah (1985). Over the course of twelve years\, he recorded more than 230 hours of interviews and location footage before shaping that material into the film’s nine-and-a-half-hour final version. \n\n\n\nA little more than a decade after Shoah premiered\, the unused footage was acquired by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, which spent more than twenty years restoring\, preserving\, and digitizing this extraordinary collection of audiovisual testimony. She is the author of An Archive of the Catastrophe: The Unused Footage of Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah\, which received an Honorable Mention for the 2020 Best First Book Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. She has published widely on documentary cinema\, digital archives\, and the representation of genocide. Her second book\, Overlooked: Visualizing Disability Across the Eugenic Atlantic\, is under contract with Columbia University Press.

SUMMARY:One SMALL miracle: Restoring an Abandoned Jewish Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a screening of one SMALL miracle\, followed by a discussion with preservationist Alan Metnick. \n\n\n\nOne SMALL miracle tells the inspiring story of the restoration of the Jewish cemetery in Goniądz\, Poland\, the ancestral home village (shtetl) of filmmaker Dr. Myrna Teck’s family. After discovering the abandoned cemetery in 2018\, Dr. Teck partnered with local residents to restore and commemorate this sacred site. \n\n\n\nFollowing the film\, Alan Metnick will discuss the importance of preserving Jewish cemeteries\, working with local communities\, and honoring the histories of once-vibrant Jewish towns. Drawing on more than two decades of preservation work in Poland\, including the restoration of the Jewish cemetery in Sławatycze\, the village where his maternal grandparents lived\, Alan will share how cemetery preservation helps safeguard Jewish history for future generations. \n\n\n\nAbout the SpeakerAlan Metnick holds degrees in history and photography and has devoted more than two decades to preserving Jewish cemeteries in Poland. SUMMARY:How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors Julie Masis for a compelling presentation on her new book\, How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her grandfather Shlomo’s memories\, family history\, and extensive archival research\, Masis recounts his survival under Romanian occupation during the Holocaust. Born in present-day Moldova\, Shlomo later immigrated to Massachusetts\, where he lived to the age of 102. During the program\, Julie will read excerpts from the book\, share family photographs\, discuss her research\, including discoveries from Romanian newspapers published during World War II\, and reflect on her journey to uncover her family’s past. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. \n\n\n\nThis program is appropriate for adults as well as middle and high school students. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP here.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulie Masis is a journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors. She is the editor and publisher of the Russian Boston Gazette\, a newspaper serving the Russian-speaking community in the Greater Boston area. Her work on Jewish history and other topics has appeared in The Times of Israel\, The Jerusalem Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Christian Science Monitor\, The Montreal Gazette\, The Globe and Mail\, and numerous other publications. Beyond journalism\, she has taught English to Buddhist monks in Cambodia\, organized tours to the Khmer Rouge tribunal\, and recently learned to ice skate.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a screening of From Swastika to Jim Crow\, followed by a live virtual conversation with the film’s directors\, Joel Sucher and Steven Fischler. \n\n\n\nFrom Swastika to Jim Crow tells the remarkable story of German Jewish scholars who fled Nazi persecution and joined the faculties of historically Black colleges and universities in the American South. There\, they encountered the challenges of leaving one oppressive society only to confront another shaped by segregation and racism. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, directors Joel Sucher and Steven Fischler will join us virtually to discuss the making of the documentary. They will share insights into their collaboration with local historian Gabrielle Edgecomb\, their interviews with refugee scholars such as philosopher Ernst Manasse of North Carolina Central University\, and the lasting impact these émigré professors had on generations of students\, including economist and former Obama administration advisor Joyce Ladner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP here.
