SUMMARY:How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors Julie Masis for a compelling presentation on her new book\, How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her grandfather Shlomo’s memories\, family history\, and extensive archival research\, Masis recounts his survival under Romanian occupation during the Holocaust. Born in present-day Moldova\, Shlomo later immigrated to Massachusetts\, where he lived to the age of 102. During the program\, Julie will read excerpts from the book\, share family photographs\, discuss her research\, including discoveries from Romanian newspapers published during World War II\, and reflect on her journey to uncover her family’s past. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. \n\n\n\nThis program is appropriate for adults as well as middle and high school students. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP here.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulie Masis is a journalist\, author\, and third-generation descendant of Holocaust survivors. She is the editor and publisher of the Russian Boston Gazette\, a newspaper serving the Russian-speaking community in the Greater Boston area. Her work on Jewish history and other topics has appeared in The Times of Israel\, The Jerusalem Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Christian Science Monitor\, The Montreal Gazette\, The Globe and Mail\, and numerous other publications. Beyond journalism\, she has taught English to Buddhist monks in Cambodia\, organized tours to the Khmer Rouge tribunal\, and recently learned to ice skate.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a special community visit to the Cape Verdean Museum in Pawtucket\, the first museum in the world dedicated to preserving and celebrating Cape Verdean history and culture. \n\n\n\nOur visit will highlight the Museum’s Cape Verdean Jewish Heritage Permanent Exhibit\, offering an opportunity to explore a lesser-known history connecting Cape Verdean and Jewish experiences. Through the Museum’s collections\, participants will encounter the art\, artifacts\, photographs\, documents\, and stories that preserve Cape Verdean history and illuminate the experiences of generations of Cape Verdean people. \n\n\n\nThe evening will also provide an opportunity to learn more broadly about Cape Verdean history and culture\, including migration\, community life\, cultural traditions\, and the deep roots of Cape Verdean Americans in Rhode Island. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is part of SBHEC’s Adult Education Series and reflects our commitment to learning with and from Rhode Island’s diverse communities and the cultural institutions preserving their histories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Between Academic Life and Family Survival: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Fisk University During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Join historians Dr. Laura Auketayeva and Dr. LaNitra Berger of George Mason University for a presentation based on a chapter from their forthcoming book\, Hired to Safety\, to be published by Wayne State University Press. \n\n\n\nDrawing on original archival research at Fisk University and the Leo Baeck Institute\, this program tells the story of Werner Cahnman\, a Jewish refugee scholar who escaped Nazi Germany and joined Fisk University’s faculty during the Holocaust. As he taught sociology\, geography\, and race relations\, Cahnman waged a tireless campaign to rescue his parents\, brother\, and other relatives trapped in Nazi-occupied Europe. SUMMARY:From Swastika to Jim Crow: The German Jewish Refugee Scholars Hired at HBCUs 
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for a screening of From Swastika to Jim Crow\, followed by a live virtual conversation with the film’s directors\, Joel Sucher and Steven Fischler. \n\n\n\nFrom Swastika to Jim Crow tells the remarkable story of German Jewish scholars who fled Nazi persecution and joined the faculties of historically Black colleges and universities in the American South. There\, they encountered the challenges of leaving one oppressive society only to confront another shaped by segregation and racism. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, directors Joel Sucher and Steven Fischler will join us virtually to discuss the making of the documentary. They will share insights into their collaboration with local historian Gabrielle Edgecomb\, their interviews with refugee scholars such as philosopher Ernst Manasse of North Carolina Central University\, and the lasting impact these émigré professors had on generations of students\, including economist and former Obama administration advisor Joyce Ladner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP here.
